  1. Most well equipped bass boats today have at least one LCD chart recorder.
  2. These are sonar devices that work by sending a high frequency signal from
  3. a transducer toward the bottom of the lake. The amount of time it takes for
  4. the signal to reach the bottom and then return to the transducer is used by
  5. the LCD recorder to calculate the depth, determine the contour of the bottom,
  6. and decide if there are obstacles in the path of the signal.

  9. Sometimes, these obstacles are fish, at other times they may be free floating
  10. weeds or other debris. The shape of the signal sent from the transducer is
  11. shaped like a cone, with the widest part of the cone toward the bottom of the
  12. lake. Usually, the depth under the boat is reported on the screen of the LCD
  13. in the form of digits. It can also be read on the scale that appears down one
  14. side of the LCD screen. The LCD chart recorder used in BASS CLASS functions
  15. almost exactly like the real thing.

  17. The difference is that the BASS CLASS LCD display shows you the locations of
  18. fish directly under the boat, and for a small area to the left and right of
  19. the boat. A real LCD shows fish anywhere within the cone of the signal it
  20. sends, and interpretation of where the fish actually are is left largely up
  21. to the user. In short, the BASS CLASS LCD recorder is a little easier to use
  22. than a real one.

  25. You can turn the LCD ON or OFF at any time by pressing either F1 or G. If the
  26. LCD is OFF, pressing F1 (or G) will turn it ON. If the LCD is ON, pressing F1
  27. (or G) will turn it OFF. Each time you turn the LCD on or off, a small amount
  28. of time is used. While the LCD is on, it uses battery power. As you move your
  29. boat around the lake, the information displayed on the LCD will change to
  30. reflect what is under the boat (and to left and right of the boat) at your
  31. new location.

  33. You can use your mouse to turn the LCD on or off by simply pointing at the
  34. LCD command with the mouse cursor and pressing the left mouse button.
  35. Objects to the left of the boat appear in the left third of the LCD screen,
  36. objects under the boat appear in the center, and objects to the right appear
  37. on the right of the LCD screen. If the LCD recorder detects a fish, it will be
  38. displayed as a red arc.

  41. The BASS CLASS LCD, like a real one, can be fooled by free floating objects
  42. that are unattached to the bottom. Like a real LCD recorder, these are
  43. interpreted by the BASS CLASS LCD as fish.
